Cortisol or Serotonin

Hello Beautiful Friends!!

I am thankful for the timely reminder I received today, “Cortisol or Serotonin… you decide!”

I am listening to the book, “Relentless Solution Focus” by Jason Selk, which I highly recommend!   As audible was reading this incredible book to me this morning, a sentence jumped out, and basically “pricked my ears” with personal meaning for me.  It was,

“Cortisol or Serotonin… you decide!”

As you probably know by now, I am a bit of a science nerd and I love learning the biology, chemistry, and physiology behind the way things work.  I know how detrimental Cortisol can be, especially when we are bombarded with it in significant amounts over a prolonged period of time.

Cortisol is the “stress hormone” and when we live in a negative place, feeling overwhelmed, stressed, depressed, frustrated… Cortisol gets released. The health repercussions, both mentally and physically, of sustained levels of cortisol in our system over time are staggering.  High cortisol levels activate our fat programs resulting in weight gain.  Cortisol creates fatigue, irritability, headaches, intestinal problems (constipation, bloating, diarrhea), anxiety, depression, increased blood pressure, low libido, poor sleep, and muscle pain/tension in head, neck, jaw and/or back. (www.premierhealth.com).

Serotonin is the “happy hormone”.  When one experiences feelings of happiness, joy, contentment, peace, love, gratitude… Serotonin gets released.  When serotonin levels are in a good range, mood, emotions, appetite and digestion are all enhanced (www.medicalnewstoday.com).

The awesome fact is, we have the power to decide which hormones get released into our bloodstreams, Cortisol or Serotonin. Our thoughts create our feelings every time.  If we want more serotonin, we must choose to think thoughts that land us in feelings of joy, love, gratitude, peace, contentment, and happiness.  Remember the universal truth, “That which you focus on expands.”  The more things we find to be happy about, the easier it is to find more things to be grateful for.  The more things we focus on that are negative, the easier it is to find more problems and stressors.

Life will continue to be a 50/50 experience.  Despite the difficult 50%, we do not have to live in a sustained state of stress.  The trick is to allow and process the hard 50.  Acknowledge the problems and trauma’s that come up.  Identify the unintentional thoughts that accompany the unfortunate circumstances.  With the help of a coach or by doing your own head hygiene, wiggle the thoughts loose that are landing you in emotions that elicit Cortisol release.  Intentionally replace the negative, problem focused thoughts with positive, solution focused thoughts.  Focus on the growth, the wins, the tender mercies.  Be the boss of your brain and use the universal truth, “That which we focus on expands” for your benefit.

What emotions do you operate your life from on the regular? Are you entertaining thoughts which trigger cortisol release or thoughts that create serotonin release the majority of the time?

I am grateful for the reminder of the absolute power I have over my health, happiness and the trajectory of my life.

“Cortisol or Serotonin… you decide.”

YOU ARE DESIGNED FOR GREATNESS!

Rooting for you always,

Candice Noss
